Postscript
On September 19, 1863, the Union forces led by General Rosencrans and
Confederate army led by General Bragg clashed in the wooded ground along
the Chickamauga creek in northern Georgia, just south of Chattanooga.
After two days of heavy fighting Bragg, not realizing that he had won
a major victory, failed to follow the retreating Union army and let the
chance of destroying his enemy slip from his fingers. The Union army was
resupplied and broke out of Chattanooga by successfully attacking Lookout
Mountain two months later. The Confederate losses at the battle of Lookout
Mountain, known as the "Battle in the Clouds" November 24 and the battle
of Missionary Ridge the next day closed the Battle of Tennessee.
